This Wednesday evening, Paris Saint-Germain won 2-2, then 4-3 on penalties against Tottenham in the 2025 European Super Cup at the Bluenergy Stadium in Udine. Here are the tops and flops of this victory.
Tops –
The Hatred of Defeat
Long gone are the days when players, once behind, couldn’t turn things around. Today, with this PSG, you have to watch the matches until the very end. Despite a truncated preparation and palpable physical pain during the match, the gap with Tottenham wasn’t that noticeable. In the end, PSG went all the way and lifted this European Super Cup with some great images to show for it.
Lee/Ramos – Opportunists
When the starting team can’t get going, it takes strong headers to pull off results. Lee scored with a great shot, and Ramos made his mark in the box with a fine header. The penalty shootout was also very important, because it showed the PSG players’ confidence despite Vitinha’s early miss.
Another title!
How can we describe PSG’s season other than to say it’s exceptional, both in terms of their play and their titles. Paris has won (almost) everything. Except for the Club World Cup, they’ve won every final. A great season has ended, and the new one begins with maximum confidence in their heads and a shared desire to start a great season again.
Flops –
Technical Mistakes
It’s difficult to play football when you’re not at 100% physical fitness. What the players lacked was freshness. We saw some unusual technical errors that at times hampered the team’s attacking potential. We would have liked to have had another match between the two teams, at a different point in the season, but that’s how it is; this Cup concludes the previous season and kicks off the new one.
Concerns about the rest of the physical preparation
The problem for this PSG team is that they’ll have to build up their core during competitive periods. It won’t be easy to juggle results and behind-the-scenes work to gain enough physical strength to make it to the 2026 World Cup. Luis Enrique and his staff have already proven they know the recipe for success, but now everyone around PSG will have to calm down, as the start of the season will likely be less controlled than last year. The important thing will be to be ready later in the season.
