Fabián Ruiz (29), Spanish midfielder for Paris Saint-Germain, spoke to Telefoot about the historic victory in Munich. He shared how deeply this triumph affected him, discussed his Ballon d’Or nominations, and looked ahead to what’s next: conquering even more with PSG and the World Cup with Spain, which is still in the back of his mind.
Ruiz: “We’re still thinking about this victory”
Three months after Munich, are you starting to realize what you’ve achieved?
We’re still thinking about this victory. This historic achievement in Munich. It brings wonderful memories. Personally, I think it’s one of the best moments of my career. Plus, I’ve been nominated for the Ballon d’Or for the first time. That means I did a very good job.
Was the Ballon d’Or a childhood dream?
The Ballon d’Or wasn’t something I dreamed of. It rewards the effort we put in every day, every match. It’s a long-term effort.
What’s the goal? To win the Champions League again?
Yes, I think the challenge isn’t winning, that’s difficult of course, but the hardest part is winning titles again. We have to come back at 100% and rewrite history. We’ll try to have the same season as last year and fight for all the titles. We know it will be a difficult challenge, but we’ll be ready.
Ruiz: “I think it’s also thanks to coach Luis Enrique.”
What about the criticism?
It’s true that last season I had the best season of my entire career. I think it’s also thanks to coach Luis Enrique. He likes his midfielder to get into the box a lot, to try their luck on the outside, he likes me to be close to the box to score. He really encourages me to come out on top, and I think that’s a facet of the game that’s always been instilled in us since he arrived. That’s why I’ve scored so many goals and provided so many assists. I’d like to try to improve this year.
On his mother
She’s the most important person in my life. She made a huge effort. When my parents separated, she was the one who took me to training. In Seville, when I was at Betis, I would go to work with her and wait for her in the car because it was too early in the morning. I would sleep while I waited, and then she would take me to training. I know that if I’m here today, it’s thanks to her. I will always give my all for her.
Ruiz: “The truth is, sharing moments with them is incredible.”
You’re married; there were a lot of PSG players.
Yes, there were Arnau (Tenas), Hakimi, Ousmane, the president, Luis Campos. They were there even though they were on vacation because it was a special day for me. Paris has become my second family. I think we spend a lot of time together, every day, all year round. The truth is, sharing moments with them is incredible.
What can we wish for you in the future?
I’ve won practically every club title. My dream would be to win the World Cup next year; that would be magnificent, a dream come true for me.
