Since leaving Paris Saint-Germain for Real Madrid in the summer of 2024, there has been a dispute between 26-year-old striker Kylian Mbappé and PSG. Since early April, the player has had 55 million euros seized from him, but the club has decided to counterattack. This Monday, we learn from RMC Sport that Paris has reacted before the Court of Justice, requesting the cancellation of this seizure, and asserting secondly that it is the striker who owes it money.
“Kylian Mbappé owes money to PSG through dilatory maneuvers that have caused him prejudice”
“PSG’s lawyers considered that Kylian Mbappé “has not sufficiently provided proof of an appearance of a debt and has failed to demonstrate any threat to recovery”.
PSG has “brought an action before the Tribunal Judiciaire to have the decision (of the Ligue de Football Professionnel’s legal committee) ordering it to pay 55 million euros annulled”, recalled Me Thomas Azzaro. This procedure will be debated on May 26, the same day as the deliberations in the formal proceedings on Monday.
In addition, PSG has asserted a “counter-claim” of 98 million euros: “Kylian Mbappé owes money to PSG as a result of the delaying tactics that caused him prejudice”, Me Renaud Semerdjian assured AFP. “The object is not to recover the 98 million euros but to show that if he owes us money, his claim is unfounded,” the lawyer added.”
Just as Mbappé’s sporting difficulties have made it difficult for him this season, despite the fact that it was supposed to be the season of glory at Real Madrid, the same can be said of his extra-sporting activities. The player and his entourage wanted to engage in an interminable arm wrestling match with PSG, who for their part are armed enough to defend themselves to the bitter end and win their case.
It’s hard to say today, from an outsider’s viewpoint, who’s at fault and who’s not. What is clear today is the rift between a player whom some still regard as a club legend, and PSG itself.
Clearly, it would be good for both parties to put an end to this affair, which has been dragging on for almost a year. And in view of the season he has just had, the end of this affair could be a major blow to the Madrid striker.
