Matvey Safonov, a 26-year-old goalkeeper who joined Paris Saint-Germain last summer from Krasnodar on a contract until 2029, has been stuck in the role of second choice behind Gianluigi Donnarumma (26). This has fueled rumors of his departure during this transfer window. Russian media reported on Monday that clubs in Russia and the United States could be interested in signing him.
“Spartak Moscow is reportedly interested, and the goalkeeper is open to a return to Russia, according to Football24/ru.
For its part, Sovsport suggests a future in MLS or a return to Russia. Zenit could afford such a move.
His former club FK Krasnodar does not seem like a very credible destination.”
These claims are quite credible, as Safonov may well tire of being PSG’s second-choice goalkeeper, especially since the transfer of Lucas Chevalier (23) reminds him that he is not seen as a successor to Gianluigi Donnarumma (26) as first-choice goalkeeper.
However, the Russian goalkeeper has dismissed the idea of leaving at the start of the transfer window, showing confidence and a willingness to fight for his place. Being a backup, perhaps a competitor, at a top European club is not uninteresting either. And PSG cannot rely on just one goalkeeper.
There is still a lot of uncertainty, especially since there is no offer and even less of an agreement.
