Paris Saint-Germain hosted Olympique de Marseille on Sunday to close out the 26th day of Ligue 1. The match was marked by chants and banners at the Parc des Princes, which did not go down well. As a result, the Ligue de Football Professionnel is to open a disciplinary file.
“On Wednesday, the LFP Disciplinary Committee is expected to open a disciplinary file against PSG and its ultras, following the abusive and homophobic chants heard, as well as banners, during the match against OM (3-1).
PSG is liable to a fine and the total or partial closure of stands, including the Auteuil virage, where the Collectif Ultras Paris, the group behind the chanting, is based, and which had already been sanctioned with a partial closure for the same reasons after the match against Strasbourg that preceded the first leg of the Classic.”
Of course, discrimination has no place in soccer, or in society. But it’s very unpleasant to see PSG and the Parc serving as an example for so many stadiums that have never been punished. This will no doubt help a few politicians, who are very silent when the insults come from other fans.
It will only be a minimum acceptable if it has continuity for other clubs. But we suspect it won’t, given the last few months. Like at the Vélodrome or Lyon, with insults being hurled in the slightest reaction. Let’s wait and see what the penalty will be for PSG.
