On Monday, Paris Saint-Germain took on Seattle Sounders FC (2-0 video highlights Seattle Sounders/PSG) to qualify for the Round of 8. Speaking to PSG TV, 26-year-old Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma reflected on his side’s qualification and success.
Donnarumma: “Our aim is always to reach the final”.
“We knew Seattle were going to play with a lot of intensity. They have some quality players, and it wasn’t an easy game, like against Botafogo. But victory is important today, to finish top of the group and go through to the last 16, because our aim is always to qualify for the final.
Here, it was the same as in European stadiums, so it’s easier for us. But the truth is, all the stadiums we’ve played in so far in the United States are fantastic. It’s a pleasure to play here, and I hope we’ll win many more matches and get to the final all together, all united. It’s very important for us and for the club to go all the way.”
PSG’s first objective was a success, as they were in a favourable position before the match. Having finished top of their group, they now head for the Round of 8 of the Club World Cup with an advantage. On the whole, the match was controlled by the Parisians, who had virtually no chances.
Conditions were not easy, but Luis Enrique’s men quickly got into their stride. With their mastery, they broke the deadlock midway through the second half to book their place in the final stages.
