Five-time Ballon D’or winner Cristiano Ronaldo, now 39 and a Real Madrid legend, is thriving in the Saudi league. During an interview at the Globe Soccer Awards ceremony, he took advantage of a question about the level of the Saudi league to take a shot at the French championship.
C.Ronaldo “France is only PSG, sorry.”
“In France, it’s only PSG, the others are finished. That’s my opinion, I don’t care what they say. In France, it’s only PSG, sorry. It’s a competitive team, OK, but PSG is the strongest. Nobody can compete with them. They have the best players, they’re the club with the most money. That’s a fact. I’m not lying, I don’t know why people are so surprised.
C.Ronaldo “I don’t care what people think.”
Do I stand by what I said? Of course you do! I’m not just saying that because I play here. I don’t care what people think. They should come here and play to see.”
Cristiano Ronaldo has never played in the French league, so it’s not fair to criticize him just yet. Unlike Lionel Messi, Neymar, Sergio Ramos or Zlatan Ibrahimovic, these stars can now give their opinion on Ligue 1, as they have been able to discover it for at least one season.
It’s a fact that every foreign player who has come to discover Ligue 1 has always found himself surprised by its defensive and tactical level. The French league may not be the best in the world, but it’s still one of the best. And with Lille set to become French champions in 2021 against PSG XXL, there are plenty of surprises in store.
