On Wednesday evening, Paris Saint-Germain defeated Flamengo on penalties (1-1, then 3-1) in the 2025 Intercontinental Cup final at the Ahmad-ben-Ali Al Rayyan Stadium in Doha, Qatar. Here are the highs and lows of this victory.
Highs –
Matvey Safonov the hero.
The 26-year-old goalkeeper had to wait to play this season, but he is making the most of it and challenging the established hierarchy. After three impressive matches, he stood out this time with four penalty saves. He had already shone in this area about a year ago in Lens during the Coupe de France. This is important for winning trophies and further demonstrates his mental strength.
Zaire-Emery solid.
Warren Zaïre-Emery still lacks the attacking qualities of Achraf Hakimi (the 27-year-old right-back). However, the 19-year-old midfielder was very strong in his duels and at distributing the ball cleanly afterward. He continues to fill in well and confirm his return to form.
Barcola brought danger.
Bradley Barcola, the 24-year-old striker, has struggled recently and showed signs of fatigue. But his introduction was promising, with some good ideas and a few nice combinations. Even so, like his team, he lacked a certain clinical edge.
Flops –
Another injury
The infirmary was finally emptying, with only Achraf Hakimi remaining as he prepares for the Africa Cup of Nations with Morocco. But Lee Kang-In had to leave the field due to a thigh injury. The 24-year-old midfielder/forward will likely undergo tests to determine the exact nature of his injury.
A rather disappointing match.
Overall, it can’t be said that this match was exciting. Even though PSG picked up the pace during extra time. We know it’s a final, but it doesn’t seem like this match is really necessary anymore, especially with the Club World Cup now on the schedule.
