On Thursday evening, Paris Saint-Germain won on penalties, 2-2 and then 4-1, against Olympique de Marseille in the 2025 Champions Trophy at the Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium in Kuwait. Here are the highs and lows of this victory.
Highs –
Lucas Chevalier.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper had a difficult time adapting to PSG, particularly during the Classico in September, which they lost 1-0 after a poor clearance. Now, with Matvey Safonov (26), who had been very good, injured, he had to step up. The Parisian goalkeeper rose to the occasion with several excellent saves.
The penalty slightly tarnished his performance; we can grant him there was some doubt about the contact. Above all, he redeemed himself particularly in the penalty shootout. A great boost for the win and for the rest of his Parisian adventure.
Pace and spectacle.
After a Parisian derby (PSG/Paris FC) that was a bit slow at times on Sunday, this Classico lived up to expectations in terms of intensity and attacking intent. There were even some truly beautiful passages of play, sometimes a little wild, with action from both sides. It’s important to appreciate an interesting match.
Ramos
Gonçalo Ramos isn’t having an easy time at PSG; he’s “only” a substitute now, even though he came to establish himself. Perhaps that’s still possible. In any case, he never complains and knows how to be decisive when he comes onto the pitch. That was the case again this time, with a nice striker’s goal, something Paris sometimes lacks.
Lows –
Defensive fragility.
We liked the pace and Chevalier, but these points also came with PSG struggling defensively at times. We can note that they held firm, especially during the numerous corners. But there were also many opportunities conceded. Including pressing that was sometimes eliminated a little too easily. There are adjustments to be made, and fitness to regain.
The broadcast.
A few image glitches, some slightly strange colors; it wasn’t ideal for enjoying a clash of French football.
