Relocated to Brittany due to the unplayable state of the Parc des Princes pitch, the Rennes vs. PSG match will take place at a packed Roazhon Park as part of the Ligue 1 opening round. According to Le Parisien, tickets sold out within hours, while the LFP will soon have to determine the implications of this fixture reversal for the return match.
Roazhon Park fills up in hours
“Less than 24 hours after the PSG-Rennes fixture was switched to Rennes-PSG, Roazhon Park is already sold out. Stade Rennais had to scramble to organize ticket sales and fill the stadium, with the Ligue 1 opening-round clash just four days away. The Rouge et Noir finally opened ticket sales at 2:00 PM this Thursday, and Breton fans turned out in force.
While 16,000 seats were already reserved for season-ticket holders, the remaining capacity was quickly snapped up. According to L’Équipe, the Rennes ticketing website saw a peak of 60,000 simultaneous connections. Fans hoping to buy tickets but arriving late were redirected to a virtual queue with a wait time of over an hour. Around a thousand supporters from the capital club are expected to make the trip to Ille-et-Vilaine.”
The last-minute relocation of the match did not dampen the enthusiasm of the Breton public. Rennes successfully mobilized its supporters despite ticket sales opening only three days before the game. The peak of 60,000 connections highlights the massive appeal of a match against Paris Saint-Germain. For Stade Rennais, the reversal offers an unexpected sporting opportunity: starting the season at home in a packed stadium, whereas the original schedule had them playing away at the Parc des Princes. Decision Awaited on Schedule Fairness
“Beyond the logistical and ticketing challenges created by this last-minute upheaval, a debate has arisen regarding the venue for the return fixture, scheduled for the weekend of March 6 as part of Matchday 23 of the French Championship. Both clubs are keen to host the match at their respective home stadiums.
The LFP has announced that the Competitions Commission will meet on Friday, August 28, to address and resolve the matter. ‘It will summon PSG and Stade Rennais. It will review whether Paris Saint-Germain met its obligations regarding the August 23 match and will rule on the consequences of swapping the fixtures for the remainder of the schedule.’
‘In the event that the match cannot take place at a backup venue,’ the LFP regulations state, ‘the Competitions Commission has the authority to reverse the fixture, meaning it will be played at the visiting team’s ground. This reversal will have no impact on the rest of the schedule, barring exceptional circumstances.'”
The decision to swap the opening-day fixture does not, therefore, automatically entail a swap for the return match. Under current regulations, Rennes could retain the right to host the game in March, thereby facing PSG twice at Roazhon Park. Paris will naturally argue for a different interpretation based on sporting fairness, ensuring each team hosts its opponent once. The commission will also need to examine the Parisian club’s obligations regarding the condition of its pitch.
The decision on August 28 will reveal whether the LFP views this situation as an exceptional circumstance justifying a further change to the schedule. In the meantime, one thing is certain: the season’s first Rennes vs. PSG match will be a sell-out, played in an atmosphere that the last-minute change has clearly not dampened.
