Matvey Safonov, a 25-year-old Russian goalkeeper, was a surprise addition to Paris Saint-Germain’s 2024 summer mercato with his arrival from Krasnodar. His father, Evgeny Safonov, was interviewed about his arrival at PSG by Odds.
“that’s the most important thing.”
“Safonov satisfied with his place at PSG? Unfortunately, I’m not a soccer expert. And I think the conversation should be between me and Matvey. I wouldn’t want to divulge it to the public.
If Matvey likes PSG and feels comfortable there, that’s the most important thing. I’ve spoken to him, he’s happy with everything, so far so good. We met him before the vacations.“
There was no question of talking about his place in the hierarchy, a difficult subject to master and one that could only have got Safonov into trouble with words that might have lacked measure. His father avoided this risk and concentrated on the positive.
It’s a welcome move, given that close friends and family can sometimes be a source of tension. No doubt the goalkeeper would prefer to play in the big games, and he had the opportunity to do so against Bayern Munich, with very mixed results. It’s up to him to fight for other opportunities, while accepting that his rival, Gianluigi Donnarumma (25), is at a very high level.
Safonov’s last few games have been satisfying, and we hope he’ll continue in that vein. At least, he seems satisfied with his Parisian adventure and determined to continue fighting for his place.
