Lucas Digne—the 32-year-old Aston Villa (contracted until 2028) and France national team left-back, who previously played for Paris Saint-Germain from 2013 to 2016—has been linked with a return to PSG via the activation of a release clause worth around €10 million. Journalist Fabrizio Romano claims the deal is already a done deal.
It is surprising to see how quickly this story is moving, at least in terms of rumors. That is often the case with football advisor Luis Campos; the media usually finds out only when discussions are already well advanced. It would be odd for this generally reliable journalist to be so definitive without cause. We can expect confirmations to follow, and perhaps an official announcement soon.
It is also interesting to have clarity on Digne’s role; he knows he will initially serve as backup to Nuno Mendes (24). However, coach Luis Enrique values competition, and positions can shift. One can assume the French international will fight for as much playing time as possible, aiming for a second stint in Paris that is more successful than the first.
It remains to be seen what role Lucas Hernandez (30)—who has recently been Mendes’s backup—will play. A departure is not out of the question, nor is a move to a central defensive role, especially given that Lucas Beraldo (22) has mostly been playing in midfield lately.
