Victoriano Melero, General Manager of Paris Saint-Germain, answered questions from Le Figaro in an interview published on Monday. In particular, he addressed the tensions surrounding TV rights in Ligue 1, with PSG accused of being a problem and “cheating”. It was also an opportunity to discuss the state of the club’s finances.
Melero “PSG could play it one-on-one.”
“Tension over TV rights?
PSG could play it individually. Economically, that would help us, but from a sporting point of view and for everyone’s development, we need a strong championship. If PSG is performing well today, it’s because there’s a collective.
It has to be exactly the same with regard to the unity of French clubs: appeasement, unity above all, the college is where everyone expresses themselves. Nasser al-Khelaïfi has expressed his vision, but with a desire for unity.
Some people forget that if there had been no commercialization of the rights following the tender process, we would have been in absolute chaos. If there had been absolute chaos, PSG would certainly have recouped more than the 35 million it will receive in TV rights this year.
Melero “We’re entering a new phase”.
Will we break even at the end of the season?
Not far off. […] You have to remember that before Covid, we were making a profit. The Club was also affected by the crisis, but our management has enabled us to regain this financial solidity.
We’re entering a new phase with the development of the PSG brand, which really has an international footprint and which we’re going to develop in the United States.”
Some people have managed to give the impression that PSG is concerned about Ligue 1 and only thinks of itself, whereas it has been more of a driving force and often seems to work in the interests of Ligue 1.
It’s not his fault that other clubs have failed to make the right moves at the mercato or install stability. For example, the numerous coaching changes at Olympique de Marseille and Olympique Lyonnais are not his fault.
It’s up to everyone to work well on their own, rather than pointing the finger elsewhere. All of this should be done in the interests of Ligue 1 as a whole, through dialogue rather than personal attacks.
In any case, PSG has been able to move forward, even if, like all clubs, it has been slowed down by the COVID crisis. Paris continues to forge ahead, with a fine development of its project. As always, some outstanding sporting results would help.
