Willian Pacho, 23-year-old defender for Paris Saint-Germain and Ecuador, spoke to CONMEBOL media about his Champions League triumph with PSG last Saturday against Inter Milan (5-0). A historic moment for Paris, with its first title in the competition, but also for the player and his country, as he is the first Ecuadorian to lift the trophy.
Pacho “It’s nice to see how the people here welcome me.”
What’s it like coming back to Ecuador after winning the Champions League?
It’s been incredible. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always watched the big clubs and the big players play, because they’re the benchmarks. I also played with them on Playstation, and that was as close as I could get (laughs).
So to be the first Ecuadorian to win the Champions League is a source of pride for me. It’s nice to see how the people here welcome me, I can see what it means to them. When I was away, I didn’t know it could be so much. But when I got here and saw my family, they cried here.
Pacho “I can see that it means a lot to the country.”
I can see that it means a lot to the country. I’m very happy, very proud, very content. Now I’m with the national team, and that’s always a pleasure. You never know when you’ll be back..
