Luis Castro, current coach of Dunkerque (L2) and former coach of Benfica B, had Gonçalo Ramos under his command in the past, and was asked by L’Equipe media what he thought of the 23-year-old Paris Saint-Germain and Portugal striker.
Luis Castro: “He has physical and technical qualities, as well as an intelligence for the game”.
“He’s a goalscorer, but he has the qualities to make decisive passes and bring a lot to the team. He’s very collective. He plays at a high level. When he played for Benfica’s senior team, he finished top scorer in the Championship, and in the Youth League under my command, and in the Portuguese U21 qualifiers, he finished top scorer again. To achieve this, you need physical and technical qualities, as well as an intelligence for the game.
Gonçalo Ramos is a former attacking midfielder, which means he’s comfortable on the ball, especially for a number nine. We’ve already seen him demonstrate his various qualities on several occasions. The latest example being his final technical move against Lyon, with a sparkling pass full of mastery.
It’s special for a striker, and reminds us that he’s not “just” a finisher. He also knows how to take part in the game and serve his team-mates, with selflessness and precision. We’ve already seen that several times this season. He now needs to make further progress in his movement and perhaps his finishing, which sometimes lacks precision, if he is to go one step further and gain a foothold in the tough competition from Paris.
