Paris Saint-Germain won on penalties (1-1 on aggregate, then 1-4 on penalties) against Liverpool (Liverpool/PSG video highlights) this Tuesday at Anfield in the second leg of the Champions League 2024-2025 Round of 16. After the match, Paris coach Luis Enrique spoke to CBS Sports Golazo.
Luis Enrique “Both teams deserved.”
Did you deserve to qualify ?
It doesn’t matter. I think both teams deserve to go through. We dominated in Paris, they played better in the return. It’s special at Anfield, we showed great personality and character. We wanted to play our best, but it was very difficult because they are so intense. The atmosphere was superb. Both teams deserved it.
What did you like best about your young team tonight ?
The character, the personality. Even during the penalty shootout, in the way they played. It all shows what kind of team we are.
Arne Slot said it was the best match he’s ever played in.
There are a lot of special ones. When the draw put PSG and Liverpool together, we both thought it was one of the best possible encounters, and both teams were superb.
Luis Enrique “it’s a great moment for the fans and the club.”
Why are PSG so strong today and capable of eliminating Liverpool ?
It’s difficult to say, because this competition isn’t played on consistency. You can be eliminated for two games. You have to be very strong at specific moments. We suffered a lot because of the first leg, because of the result, because it wasn’t deserved. But that’s soccer, and sometimes it’s unfair.
Today we were a bit lucky, they hit the post and Donnarumma was like Alisson in the first game. And in the end, soccer will take away some things and give you others. We’re happy to be moving forward, and it’s a great moment for the fans and the club.
