Paris Saint-Germain played out a 2-2 draw against AS Monaco at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night in their Champions League play-off second leg, booking their place in the round of 16 with a 5-4 aggregate victory. Speaking to Canal+, Luis Enrique hailed the qualification but admitted his frustration over a poor first-half display and a nervy finish to the match.
Luis Enrique: “I don’t like it, but that’s football”
Interviewer: Have you enjoyed your evening? Did you like what you saw out there?
Enrique: “Is that a trick question? No, I don’t like it when we play at that level. I don’t like it, but that’s football. We’ve had an incredible run of fixtures in this Champions League, and then we had this play-off against Monaco. They are a proper side. A top team. In the first half, we were very sloppy. In the second, however, we controlled the entire game and scored twice. It was the perfect scenario, but we switched off for their last chance, conceded, and it became dangerous. But we’re happy; we knew that to progress in the Champions League, you have to know how to weather the storm in these games. We’re experts at that.”
Luis Enrique: “That’s a question for our opponents”
Interviewer: Can you get back to the level you showed last season?
Enrique: “That’s a question you should be asking our opponents. Let’s see what they tell you.”
Interviewer: That it’s difficult?
Enrique: “No—that it is very, very, very difficult to play against us.”
