PSG needed to bounce back from their frustrating defeat by Atlético Madrid in the Champions League, and they did just that with a comprehensive victory. Of course, it doesn’t bring back the points in the European competition. But it’s good to see goals and a win without any scares, and even more so with good team management.

It’s enough to push Olympique de Marseille back to 9 points after their embarrassing defeat by promoted Auxerre at the Stade Vélodrome. And it’s all the more reason to cast doubt on a Marseille team that has been slipping at home this season.

Monaco stayed 6 points clear by winning at Strasbourg, a far from straightforward trip, but one which was well negotiated in order to dispel any doubts.

Behind them, Lille and Nice saw the Monegasques and Parisians drift further apart, as they were forced to share the points after a fine 2-2 draw. Not a bad result, but not really a good one either. Lyon took advantage of the situation to win the derby against AS Saint-Etienne, who are bogged down in the race for survival.

In the latter, Montpellier finally won against Brest, who continue to slide towards the goal. This was enough to catch up with the Stéphanois, the Angevins, the Nantais (beaten by Lens) and 17th-placed Le Havre, who suffered a 0-3 defeat at home to Reims. The latter confirmed its place in the European race by sticking with Lens. There are also Auxerrois, the surprise package of the early season.
