On Sunday evening, Paris Saint-Germain lost 2-1 against Paris FC in Matchday 34 of the 2025-2026 Ligue 1 season at the Stade Jean Bouin. Here are the highs and lows of this defeat.
Highs –
Matvey Safonov, a paradoxical standout despite the loss
Conceding two goals and still finishing among the top performers is never ideal, but Safonov clearly prevented the evening from turning sour earlier. He made seven saves, and Paris FC created several clear-cut chances even before PSG opened the scoring. In a friendly match played without excessive pressure, the Russian goalkeeper further impressed.
Bradley Barcola, the goal that could boost morale
In a period where he is trying to regain momentum after his ankle injury, Barcola at least reminded everyone that he can be decisive. His goal in the 50th minute, from a Fabian Ruiz cross following a move initiated by Kvaratskhelia, was the only real positive attacking note of the evening for PSG. It doesn’t erase everything, but it’s a useful sign before the final.
Fabian Ruiz, still in sync
In a PSG side that was rather neutral collectively, Fabian Ruiz brought precision and provided the assist for Barcola’s goal. He’s not the most spectacular player, but he’s often the one who restores order when the game starts to drift into a sluggish performance. On nights like this, it shows.
Lows –
Dembélé’s substitution, the biggest scare of the evening
This is obviously the issue that overshadows everything else. Ousmane Dembélé was substituted in the 27th/28th minute and went straight to the dressing room. AS suggests the injury was a precautionary measure and indicates it’s not serious, but with the Champions League final against Arsenal less than two weeks away, this kind of scare is far from insignificant.
Dimitri Lucea, a difficult first start
He shouldn’t be condemned, especially in an experimental context, but Dimitri Lucea struggled. Paris FC quickly targeted his flank, and several inaccurate passes put PSG under pressure. For a first start, it’s tough, but also a valuable learning experience. The top level doesn’t hand out favors, even on the night of the trophy presentation.
The final lapse, frankly avoidable
Paris was leading 1-0, then conceded in the 76th minute before succumbing in the 94th minute on a poorly executed counter-attack after a corner. In theory, the defeat has no impact on their league position. In terms of content, however, ending Ligue 1 with a loss of control in a derby remains a small blemish on the picture of champions.
