Officially signed by Paris Saint-Germain until 2031, 21-year-old Belgian left winger Mika Godts, who arrived from Ajax Amsterdam, was attracted by a project built around his development and versatility. Speaking to Dutch daily De Telegraaf**, his agent Niels De Jonck reveals the story behind the deal.**
“Paris Saint-Germain have known Mika since his youth academy years.”
Godts’ transfer therefore does not look like a late reaction from PSG to opportunities arising on the market. The club had been monitoring his development for several years before deciding that the time had come to take action. This continuity makes the €45 million investment, which could rise by a further €10 million in bonuses, more coherent for a player who is still developing. Paris are not simply signing the winger seen at Ajax: they are investing in his potential for growth and in what he could become within the demanding environment established by Luis Enrique.
De Jonck: “The conversation was very pleasant and warm”
“The conversation was very pleasant and warm from the very beginning: filled with humour, while naturally leaving room for serious discussions from a sporting perspective. He appreciates players who are not confined to a fixed position, but who are capable of moving freely around the pitch, exploiting open spaces and bringing an element of unpredictability.”
Luis Enrique clearly did not sell Godts on simply being a backup behind Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. The coach presented him with a way of playing in which his mobility can become a strength: starting from the left, switching positions, attacking the inside channels or appearing in other attacking areas. This promise obviously does not guarantee him a starting place, but it offers him something more stimulating than a fixed position and a few minutes handed out at the end of matches.
The message is also perfectly aligned with the way PSG operate collectively. Under Luis Enrique, attackers must understand several positions, contribute to the pressing and know how to create disorder without unbalancing the team. Godts is therefore joining an attractive project, but also a demanding one. His development will depend as much on his ability to take players on as on his capacity to understand and embrace this structured freedom.
De Jonck: “PSG made it clear to him from the start that their interest was serious”
“PSG made it clear to Mika from the very beginning that their interest was serious. They presented a clear sporting vision, and key figures within the club personally invested time and energy in this project.”
In a market where promising young players sometimes receive several similar pitches, the personal involvement of decision-makers can make the difference. PSG appear to have moved forward with a clear message: Godts is wanted, his profile fits the project, but his development will have to follow certain stages. This approach helps explain why the Belgian chose Paris despite the reported competition from Barcelona and Bayern Munich. The club did not simply present him with its prestige. It explained to him what role he could gradually earn for himself.
De Jonck: “He is starting from scratch there”
“He is starting from scratch there. Mika will have to earn his playing time. At a club like PSG, nothing is handed to you on a silver platter, not even when a transfer fee of around €55 million has been paid for you.”
This clear-eyed approach is probably the best way to view his arrival. The transfer fee inevitably creates expectations, but it does not change the sporting hierarchy. Godts will have to convince the coaching staff in training, meet Luis Enrique’s tactical demands and make the most of his opportunities without trying to skip steps. He is arriving to compete, learn and grow, not with an artificially guaranteed status based on his price tag.
De Jonck: “PSG is not a finish line”
“For Mika and me, this transfer will be a success if Mika continues to develop in Paris, both as a player and as a person, and eventually becomes a key player at the highest level. PSG is not a finish line. It is a new beginning. Just as Ajax was in January 2023.”
The statement sums up the entire ambition behind the transfer. Joining PSG represents a reward for the journey he has already completed, but above all, the beginning of a much greater challenge. Godts will have to turn his potential into consistency, and then that consistency into genuine influence at the highest level. The Parisian club offers him enormous exposure, a coach who values versatile profiles and competition capable of pushing his development forward. It is now up to him to ensure that Paris is not merely the biggest transfer of his young career, but the place where his career truly reaches another level.
