Paris Saint-Germain had initiated contract extensions for a number of key players, but recent results and performances may have cast doubt on one of the dossiers. According to RMC Sport‘s Fabrice Hawkins, the club’s directors are not convinced by Gianluigi Donnarumma’s latest performances and have put the contract extension originally planned on hold.
“Gianluigi Donnarumma’s contract extension is on stand-by. The club’s directors believe that the goalkeeper’s performance is not currently in line with the salary increase requested.”
If this turns out to be true, we can understand why. Donnarumma has had a complicated start to the season, with a number of errors and, above all, a number of games in which he has failed to make the expected saves. He hasn’t added any value this year, and this is increasingly evident in PSG’s performances in the Champions League and Ligue 1.
This doesn’t mean that he won’t extend his contract, but it does mean that the club is putting pressure on its experienced keeper. Nevertheless, we’re going to remain cautious on this matter, as everything can happen very quickly in soccer.
