Gianluigi Donnarumma, the 25-year-old goalkeeper who arrived at Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 with a contract running until 2026 (following the end of his own at AC Milan), is regularly called into question by fans and observers. However, an extension is currently under discussion. Today, L’Equipe claims that it could be hampered by the choices made by coach Luis Enrique, who started Matvey Safonov (25) against Bayern Munich.
“We’re hoping for a reaction from him over the next few weeks.”
“Beyond Tuesday evening, he is questioning the esteem in which he is held by the capital club, and this could have implications for his future when he is in talks to extend (he is linked to Paris until 2026).
Internally, his bitterness is not seen as a bad thing, and we’re hoping for a reaction from him in the coming weeks.”
We remain cautious, as the sports newspaper can get carried away too quickly into the positive and the negative. Especially the latter. Donnarumma hasn’t been given a start in a Champions League match. That’s a milestone, to be sure. But it doesn’t necessarily change everything.
He also needs to be aware that he’s a professional player at an ambitious club, and that the competition is there. The position of goalkeeper is certainly a special one, but there are no special rules either. The coach always has the right to make choices, and everyone has to give their all to deserve to play.
Let’s wait and see before talking about long-term consequences. Even if Donnarumma’s future isn’t necessarily with Paris, that’s part of soccer.
