Originally scheduled for Sunday night at 8:45 p.m. at the Stade Vélodrome, the Ligue 1 clash between Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique de Marseille (Matchday 5) has been postponed to Monday night at 8:00 p.m. due to the weather forecast for the Marseille area. This decision was not at all PSG’s preference, especially given that the 2025 Ballon d’Or ceremony is set for the same evening in Paris, according to RMC Sport.
“Unthinkable for the Parisian club and president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi not to attend this event. He may therefore prioritize the Ballon d’Or ceremony. With that in mind, PSG had lobbied for the match to be played Monday at 3:00 or 5:00 p.m., to allow travel to Paris afterward — or even to postpone the game later in the season. December 2, the only open slot in a packed calendar, was proposed. But that seemed impossible under the rules, and Marseille reportedly refused outright.
OM, for its part, always wanted to play Monday at 8:00 p.m. and stick to the rule, without considering other options. For the Olympians, moving the Classique to daytime was out of the question while people are at work and children at school — ‘out of respect for the supporters.’
You can understand PSG’s position. The club finds itself somewhat “split” between a very important match and a ceremony where it expects to shine with several awards. It’s a frustrating choice, but one that follows the regulations and makes sense for the fans, since a daytime game would have caused problems.
There was no ideal solution, and it’s hard to judge from the outside without knowing all the constraints. But it’s clearly an awkward situation that will keep people talking.”
