Since Paris Saint-Germain qualified for the Champions League quarter-finals against Liverpool (April 8 and 14), there has been talk of a possible postponement of their trip to Lens, scheduled for Saturday, April 11, as part of Matchday 29 of Ligue 1. Even though Lens has expressed its resistance, PSG’s request could be granted. This was confirmed by RMC Sport on Monday. It is also reported that Strasbourg wants to postpone its match against Brest, scheduled for that same weekend, between the Europa League Conference quarter-finals.
As revealed by L’Équipe and confirmed by RMC Sport, the European champions want to postpone this match at the home of Lens, who are close behind them at the top of the table. The board of directors of the Professional Football League (LFP), which has the power to modify the league schedule during the season, is to meet this Thursday morning to make a decision on the matter.
RC Strasbourg’s request will also be examined by the LFP board. Like PSG, the Alsatian club, which is set to face Mainz in the Conference League quarterfinals, wants to postpone its match against Stade Brestois on Sunday, April 12 (5:15 pm).
If these postponements are approved, the matches will be rescheduled between Matchday 33 and Matchday 34 of Ligue 1 (the last two rounds of the season). They could then potentially be played on Wednesday, May 13th.
Nothing is certain until it’s official. But it has been clearly stated that the LFP (French Professional Football League) can decide on a postponement even if a club objects. This suggests that PSG could prevail, for the good of French football, which desperately needs European results to maintain a good position in the UEFA rankings and thus secure places in the various competitions.
One can also understand those who believe it’s up to PSG to adapt, as they need to build their squad to prepare for a season that lives up to their ambitions. They could also fully commit to their European matches, rotating players against Lens. The debate is almost constant; we’ll let the LFP decide. We can also highlight the potential appeal of the clash between the top two teams in the league at the end of the season, as the match would be scheduled between the penultimate and final matchdays of Ligue 1 if it is postponed.
