In an interview with L’Équipe, Miguel Torrecilla, former sporting director of Celta Vigo, looks back on Luis Enrique’s (54, coach) time at the Spanish club, and stresses the extent to which the DNA of today’s Paris Saint-Germain bears the Spanish coach’s stamp. He stresses the intensity and pressure that are the hallmarks of Luis Enrique’s version of PSG, and the value of his technical staff.
Torrecilla “I didn’t have a crystal ball, but I knew he’d be a top coach”.
“He was already surrounded by Rafel Pol (assistant) and Joaquin Valdes (psychologist). When you see that pressing, all those runs, that PSG, it’s 100% Luis Enrique. I didn’t have a crystal ball, but I knew he’d be a top coach. When Barcelona called me to tell me they wanted him, there couldn’t have been a more intelligent decision.”
Luis Enrique has established himself as a first-rate coach thanks to a philosophy based on intense pressing, fast and collective play. After a formative spell at Celta Vigo, he reached his peak at FC Barcelona, winning a historic treble in 2015 and racking up nine major trophies. With the Spanish national team, he revitalized the squad by focusing on youth and versatility.
Since 2023 at Paris Saint-Germain, he has imposed his demanding style, leading the club to an historic quadruple, including the 2025 Champions League. His ability to unite his staff and players has made him a respected and visionary coach in Europe.
