The Trophée des Champions, traditionally the first official match of the season and pitting the previous Ligue 1 champion against the Coupe de France winner, is beginning to take shape for the 2026 edition. L’Équipe reports that the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) has decided that the match will be held in France, despite consideration of relocating it to Africa.
“The LFP’s board of directors made its decision this Wednesday: the 2026 edition of the Trophée des Champions will be played in France this summer. The two African bids were rejected.
The match between the future French champion and the Coupe de France winner is scheduled for August 15 or 16, three weeks after the World Cup final.”
In an effort to promote French football abroad, the LFP has held the Trophée des Champions several times in foreign venues in recent years. This has often resulted in organizational issues leading to postponements. There may have been a preference for simplicity, especially after the World Cup. Not to mention that some fans in France also regretted no longer having access to this match. We are now waiting to find out the exact location and date.
