On Wednesday evening, Paris Saint-Germain drew 0-0 against Athletic Bilbao in Matchday 6 of the 2025-2026 Champions League at the San Mamés Stadium. Here are the highs and lows of this victory.
Highs –
Désiré Doué returns.
The 20-year-old midfielder/forward, injured in October against Lorient, was finally able to return to the pitch. Excellent news, as he is a very special player. Of course, he wasn’t yet at his peak. He needs to get back to full fitness.
Matvey Safonov.
The 26-year-old goalkeeper confirmed his good performance against Rennes last Saturday, with some fine saves both on and off his line. It’s good for PSG to know they have this security. Will there be real competition for the starting position? We’ll have to wait and see when Lucas Chevalier (24) returns from injury.
Lows –
A lull in the first half.
It wasn’t easy against Bilbao’s excellent pressing in the first half, but PSG also lacked the right ingredients. Little movement, slow play, duels played without much intensity… At least there was a wake-up call afterward, and no goals conceded during this disastrous 10-minute spell.
The finishing.
There were errors in their play, difficulties, but also, ultimately, plenty of chances. PSG should have scored more. They had already touched the ball 25 times in the box by the 62nd minute. The magnificent move finished by Bradley Barcola in the 64th minute with a shot that hit the crossbar, when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was perfectly positioned for a pass, is a good example of the lack of precision in both decision-making and execution.
