Luis Enrique, the Paris Saint-Germain coach, answered questions from La Nueva España this Wednesday during the Media Day organized ahead of the Champions League final against Arsenal on May 30th. He was notably asked about his possible retirement age, having turned 56 on May 8th.
Luis Enrique: “I don’t want to be the old codger who coaches.”
“How much longer do you see yourself coaching?
That’s an excellent question, because I ask myself the same thing. I tell my wife, ‘I don’t want to be the old codger who coaches.’ I don’t want to, but of course, I see more and more old codgers coaching.
I’m even thinking up to sixty… I even joke with my brother Felipe, telling him, ‘I have to retire before you.’” He’s a year younger than me, he’s 55, and he’s retiring at 61… Do the math. If I don’t retire before my brother, I think it will be a mistake. If I still have the energy and the desire, who knows?”
Of course, Luis Enrique isn’t focused on a possible end of his career right now. The goal is to win this second Champions League title with PSG and continue with the project he’s fully committed to.
However, the Spaniard already has a clear idea of when his career might end, in about four years. There’s no certainty, but it would align with the rumors of a contract extension until 2030 with PSG. Let’s wait and see how things unfold; for now, we must savor the present.
